Hosting Henry VIII at Exeter

Exeter will be hosting a series of Tudor festivities and living history across 13-15 June 2024 as part of Historic Royal Palaces’ Henry VIII on Tour. See below for the full programme of events.

Thursday 13 June

  • 12:30pm - Exeter Guildhall
    Civic Welcome of Henry VIII by the Lord Mayor of Exeter and the Earl of Devon in front of Exeter Cathedral in a spectacular ceremony renewing the city’s loyalty to the king with fanfares by His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts and Tudor choral music from Exeter University Chapel Choir (directed by Michael Graham). The civic procession will leave the Guildhall c.12.20pm returning there again in procession from the Cathedral. (no booking required).
  • 7:00pm - Exeter Cathedral - BOOKING REQUIRED
    Concert of Early Tudor Music (including compositions by Henry VIII, Fayrfax, Taverner, Tallis and Packe) given by Exeter Cathedral Choir (directed by Timothy Noon) and His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts.

Friday 14 June

  • All day - Exeter Cathedral, St Nicholas’ Priory and Tuckers’ Hall
    Schools’ visits/workshops. 

Saturday 15 June

  • 10.30am-12.30pm - Tuckers’ Hall
    Rosemary Griggs ‘Dressed to Impress a King’: show-and-tell Tudor dressmaking (no booking required).
  • 2.30-4:00pm - St Nicholas’ Priory - BOOKING REQUIRED
    Talk by Professor Anthony Musson (Historic Royal Palaces): ‘Feasting with a Tudor king’, followed by show-and tell: ‘The Tudor Kitchen’ with Sally Dyer.

  • 6:30pm (for 7:00pm start) - Exeter Guildhall - BOOKING REQUIRED
    Royal Banquet - ‘Feasting with Henry VIII’ - a Tudor-inspired banquet with Henry VIII, drinks reception and musical entertainment.
