The Riding Chapel
A significant feature of Henry VIII's life was music and the singing of the daily offices by The Chapel Royal. When on progress, a smaller 'Riding Chapel' composed of both men and boys was selected to travel with him. Watch two young choristers talk about their upcoming adventure on progress.
Meet Edward Watson
Meet Edward Watson, a 21-year old Tudor courtier. It's 1541 and Henry VIII's grand progress north to York is just about to arrive in the village of Lyddington, where he is in charge of overseeing the preparations. Hear from Edward, who tells us about the pressures - and opportunities - of such an event.
Missa Christe Jesu
Under Henry VIII, royal progresses were also sonic experiences. Solemn polyphony accompanied the king’s devotions; jubilant songs rang out in great halls; charming miniatures were shared in the intimacy of the privy chamber. Watch the recording Missa Christe Jesu Gloria by William Rasar (c.1515) in Lyddington church, under the direction of Toby Ward and guided by Professor Magnus Williamson.
